Japanese Alternatives to Wera and Wiha: VESSEL and ANEX Screwdrivers, Bit Ratchets and Hex Keys

Wera and Wiha are the German screwdriver brands many people know by name: Kraftform, Zyklop, Hex-Plus, speedE. Japanese brands VESSEL and ANEX make tools for the same jobs. This guide pairs five Wera and Wiha designs with VESSEL and ANEX tools we carry, and puts the published figures side by side. Where we could not confirm a figure, the table says Not confirmed.

Torque figures for electric screwdrivers are the maximum the motor delivers; manual torque is how much you can apply by hand with the motor off. Hex key angle figures are each maker's own figure for how far off-axis the ball or spherical end works.

1. Instead of Wera Kraftform Micro: ANEX 3600 or VESSEL TD-56

ANEX 3600 Super Fit precision screwdriver set

ANEX 3600 Super Fit: rotating cap, interchangeable bits

The Kraftform Micro handle is known for its rotating cap and its separate zones for fine control and fast turning. The ANEX 3600 follows the same idea. TRUSCO describes a slim front grip for fast turning, a square-section rear grip for more force, and a rotating end cap for fine work. It uses 4 mm hex-shank bits held in a collet chuck, which TRUSCO says removes bit play.

The set has one handle and three double-ended bits: +000/+00, +0/−1.8 and +1/−3 (95 g, made in Japan).

VESSEL TD-56 precision screwdriver set

VESSEL TD-56: six fixed precision drivers

If you prefer one driver per tip, the TD-56 has six: slotted 0.9, 1.2, 1.8 and 2.3 mm and Phillips 00 and 0. TRUSCO says the cushion grip slides along the handle to where you want it, and the knurled handle allows fine rotation (175 g, made in Japan).

2. Instead of the Wera Zyklop Mini: ANEX 525 Compact Bit Ratchet 52

ANEX 525-28B compact bit ratchet set with bits

ANEX 525: 52 teeth, 20 mm wide head

A bit ratchet turns 1/4" hex bits in places where a screwdriver handle will not fit. Distributor listings give the Wera Zyklop Mini 1 a 72-tooth mechanism and an 87 mm length. The ANEX 525 has fewer teeth (52), so it needs a little more swing per click. In exchange, TRUSCO lists an ultra-thin 20 mm wide head and 19 mm ultra-short bits for most sizes, so the total height over the screw stays low.

  • 525-28B: Phillips 1–3, slotted 6, hex 2.5–6, Torx T6–T40, box bits 5–13 mm, plus a stubby handle and a bit holder (675 g)
  • 525-10B: Phillips 1–3, slotted 6, hex 2.5–8 (94 g)

For more ways to reach awkward screws, see our guide to ratchet tools for tight spaces.

3. Instead of Wera Hex-Plus Multicolour: VESSEL 8909BP Rainbow

VESSEL 8909BP Rainbow colour-coded ball-end hex key set

VESSEL 8909BP: one colour per size, ball end up to 38°

Wera's Multicolour keys are colour coded by size so you can pick the right one quickly. VESSEL's Rainbow keys use the same idea: MISUMI describes them as colour coded with a different colour for every size. The 8909BP has nine ball-end keys from 1.5 to 10 mm, and MISUMI lists a maximum angle of 38° for the ball end (Wera lists up to 25° for its spherical end). A removable magnetizer in the holder can magnetize or demagnetize the keys (356 g, made in Japan).

Distributor listings say Wera's Hex-Plus profile allows up to 20% more torque. We did not find a comparable torque claim from VESSEL. For a smaller set, the 8906BP has six keys from 1.5 to 5 mm.

4. Instead of Wiha VDE insulated screwdrivers: VESSEL 202PS and ANEX 7900

VESSEL 202PS-1 Ball-Grip insulated screwdriver set

VESSEL 202PS-1: IEC 60900 tested, two drivers

Wiha's insulated screwdrivers are rated to 1000 V AC, and each tool is tested at 10,000 V AC to EN/IEC 60900. VESSEL's Ball-Grip insulated screwdrivers are tested to the same standard: MISUMI lists them as passing the seven VDE tests of IEC 60900, with a note to confirm that the working environment is AC 1000 V or DC 1500 V or less. A shaft cover guards against shorts, and the tip has no step, so it fits into narrow spaces. The grip has an embossed mark you can feel to tell plus from minus.

The 202PS-1 has a +2 and a −6 driver with 100 mm shafts (200 mm overall, 80 g for the set); the 202PS-2 has the same tips with 150 mm shafts. Both are made in Japan.

ANEX 7900-2-200 slim insulated screwdriver

ANEX 7900-2-200: 1000 V, slim, 200 mm shaft

The ANEX 7900-2-200 is an insulated screwdriver with a 1000 V withstand voltage (insulation tested), according to TRUSCO. It has a slim shaft for narrow terminal blocks, a 200 mm reach, a magnetic tip, and a torsion section in the shaft that absorbs excess torque and reduces cam-out (112 g, made in Japan).

Check before you buy: we could not confirm that the ANEX 7900 is certified to IEC 60900 or carries a VDE mark. If your workplace requires that certification for live work, choose the VESSEL 202PS or confirm with us first.

5. Instead of the Wiha speedE II: VESSEL 220USB electric screwdrivers

VESSEL 220USB-P1 electric screwdriver

VESSEL 220USB-P1: three modes, up to 2.0 N·m

The speedE II is a screwdriver-shaped electric driver: Wiha lists 0.4 or 1.0 N·m with the motor and 12 N·m by hand. VESSEL's 220USB drivers are the same kind of tool with more motor torque. The 220USB-P1 has three speed and torque modes (280, 340 and 400 rpm; 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 N·m), charges by USB-C in about 60 minutes, and is 147 mm long (170 g).

The 220USBC goes further: TRUSCO lists 3.0 N·m with the motor, 12 N·m by hand, 280 rpm and an LED light. One key difference: the speedE II comes with insulated blades for electrical work; the VESSEL drivers are not described as insulated.

How to choose

Match the job, not the name. Start from the job: tiny screws, screws in tight spots, hex sockets, live electrical work, or many screws in a row.

Know your tips. Many Japanese-made products use JIS cross-head screws, which fit JIS-tipped drivers best. Our JIS vs Phillips guide explains the difference.

For live work, check the certification. Insulation ratings and certifications are not the same thing. Follow the rules for your workplace.

FAQ

Are these copies of Wera or Wiha tools?

No. They are separate designs from Japanese makers that do the same kind of job. Teeth counts, angles and torque figures differ, as the table shows.

Do Wera or Wiha bits fit the ANEX ratchet and VESSEL electric drivers?

The ANEX 525 and VESSEL 220USB-P1 take 6.35 mm (1/4") hex-shank bits, the common standard. The ANEX ratchet is designed around ultra-short bits; longer bits raise the height over the screw.
