KYORITSU (KEW) Clamp Meter Buying Guide: 2009R, 2010, 2210R, 2433RBT and More Compared

KYORITSU (also known by its model prefix KEW) makes a wide range of clamp meters for electricians, maintenance teams and panel builders. This guide compares the KYORITSU clamp meters we stock, all genuine Japanese-market models shipped from Japan, so you can match a model to the job: AC or AC/DC current, leakage current, True RMS, jaw size and Bluetooth. Every value below is taken from our product pages. Where a value is not printed there, we write "Not confirmed" instead of guessing.

Quick answer

  • General AC electrical work with voltage and resistance: KEW 2117R or KEW 2200R (both True RMS, AC current up to 1000 A).
  • DC current (solar, batteries, DC drives): KEW 2009R for large cables (AC/DC 2000 A, 55 mm jaw), 2300R for compact AC/DC work up to 100 A.
  • Small currents in control circuits: 2010 (AC/DC 20 A) or KEW 2500 for DC mA signals such as 4-20 mA loops.
  • Leakage current: KEW 2433RBT (Bluetooth, True RMS) or KEW 2413F (large-diameter leak clamp).
  • Very large or bundled conductors: KEW 2210R flexible clamp (AC 3000 A, 150 mm conductor diameter).

How to choose by job

AC only or AC/DC?
A standard current clamp measures AC only. If you work on solar PV, battery banks, DC motors, vehicles or rectifier outputs, you need an AC/DC model. In our KYORITSU range, the AC/DC models are the KEW 2009R (2000 A AC/DC), the 2300R fork-type (100 A AC/DC) and the 2010 (20 A AC/DC). For low-level DC signals in milliamperes, the KEW 2500 measures DC current up to 100 mA, with a listed measurement range of 0.01 to 120.0 mA and a 6 mm maximum conductor diameter.

True RMS or average-responding?
Inverters, LED drivers, VFDs and switching power supplies produce distorted waveforms. A True RMS meter reads these more accurately than an average-value (MEAN) meter. On our product pages, the KEW 2200R, 2204R, 2117R, 2210R, 2009R, 2300R and 2433RBT are listed as True RMS. The KEW 2127R is listed as "RMS rectification". The KEW 2200, 2010 and 2413F are listed as average-value rectification, which is fine for clean sine-wave loads.

Leakage clamp meters
A leakage clamp meter resolves very small currents (mA), so you can clamp around all live conductors together and see current leaking to earth, or check the earth wire directly. This helps track down nuisance RCD/GFCI trips and insulation problems without shutting the circuit down. The KEW 2433RBT has 3 ranges (AC 40/400 mA/400 A), 0.01 mA minimum resolution, data hold, peak hold and Bluetooth. The KEW 2413F is a larger leak clamp with 0.1 mA minimum resolution, peak hold and a recorder output terminal for connecting a recorder.

Jaw size and form factor
Check the maximum conductor diameter before you buy. A slim jaw is easier in crowded panels; a large jaw is needed for heavy feeder cables. Listed maximum conductor diameters: KEW 2210R 150 mm (flexible sensor), KEW 2204R 90 mm, KEW 2009R 55 mm, KEW 2200 and KEW 2117R 33 mm, 2300R 10 mm (fork-type), 2010 7.5 mm and KEW 2500 6 mm.

Bluetooth
Among the clamp meters in this guide, the KEW 2433RBT is the only model listed as Bluetooth enabled. For Bluetooth on other test jobs, KYORITSU's BT range in our store also includes insulation, earth and power testers (see the KYORITSU collection).

FAQ

Is KEW the same as KYORITSU?
Yes. KYORITSU uses "KEW" in its model names, so "KEW 2009R" and "KYORITSU 2009R" refer to the same meter. Some of our listings show the KEW prefix and some do not (for example, the 2010 and 2300R).

Which KYORITSU clamp meter measures DC current?
From the models we stock: the KEW 2009R (AC/DC 2000 A), the 2300R (AC/DC 100 A), the 2010 (AC/DC 20 A) and the KEW 2500 (DC 100 mA). The KEW 2200, 2200R, 2117R, 2127R, 2204R and 2210R are AC current clamps, though the 2200, 2200R, 2117R and 2127R also measure DC voltage through test leads.

Can a normal clamp meter measure leakage current?
A normal clamp meter is built for amperes, so it cannot resolve the few milliamps typical of leakage. Use a leakage clamp meter such as the KEW 2433RBT (0.01 mA minimum resolution) or the KEW 2413F (0.1 mA minimum resolution).

Are these Japanese-market models?
Yes. Every meter in this guide is a genuine, new Japanese-market model shipped from Japan. Country of origin varies by model and is listed on each product page.
