Best Allen Wrench Set (Hex Keys): Metric or Inch, Ball End, T-Handle and 14 Japanese Picks
Share
Quick answer: match the size system first, then pick the shape for the space
- Metric or inch: buy the system your screws use. Metric and SAE (inch) keys are not interchangeable, and forcing them causes damage (BobVila).
- One everyday metric set: a 9-piece 1.5–10 mm ball-end set such as the VESSEL 8909BP (magnetizer included) or KTC HLD2509.
- Tight spaces: a short under-neck set such as the KTC HLDS2509.
- Inch screws: the KTC HL259BSP (1/16–3/8 in).
- Easier turning: a T-handle such as the TTC TL series, if you have room above and around the screw (BobVila).
- With a ratchet or torque wrench: 3/8" drive hex bit sockets such as the KTC TBT310H or Ko-ken RS3010M/8-L62.
"Allen wrench", "Allen key", "hex key" and "hex wrench" all name the same tool (BobVila): a hexagonal bar (or a bar with a hexagonal tip) that fits the six-sided socket in a screw head. This guide sorts the main types by job and compares 14 hex keys, T-handles and hex bit sets from VESSEL, KTC, TTC, Ko-ken and ANEX, using the specifications on their product pages. "Not confirmed" means the page does not state the value.

We sell Japanese tools, so this guide covers Japanese brands only. Here is what their product pages show, rather than general claims about quality:
- Short-arm and long-arm lengths listed per size. The KTC HL257 and HL259SP pages list the under-head (short arm) length and overall length for every key, so you can check reach before you buy.
- Material stated. For example, chrome vanadium steel (VESSEL 8906BP), SCM435 chrome molybdenum steel (Ko-ken 157H-10 and RS3010M/8-L62) and chromium molybdenum vanadium steel (ANEX ACHX9-65L).
- Extras for daily use. VESSEL includes a magnetizer with the 8909BP that magnetizes and demagnetizes the keys. TTC and ANEX list their keys and bits as color-coded, and VESSEL sells its sets as "Rainbow" (per title).
- Country of origin. 11 of the 14 products here list Japan. The KTC HL257 lists Taiwan, and the KTC HL259SP and HL259BSP list China.
What we do not claim: that these keys are harder or last longer than American or European ones. We have not found a test that compares them, so judge each product by its stated specifications.
The 4 things that decide which hex key set you need
1. Metric or inch (SAE)
Metric and SAE keys are not interchangeable (BobVila). 13 of the 14 products here are metric. For inch screws, choose the KTC HL259BSP (1/16–3/8 in).
2. Shape: L-key, T-handle or bit
- L-key: use the short arm for torque and the long arm to reach recessed screws (BobVila).
- T-handle: easier to apply torque, but needs clearance above the screw (BobVila).
- Bit sockets and hex bits: use them with a ratchet, torque wrench or screwdriver handle.
3. Ball end or straight hex
A ball end lets you turn the screw with the key at an angle when access is awkward (BobVila). Most of the KTC and VESSEL sets here have ball ends. How much torque a ball end can carry compared with a straight hex end is Not confirmed on these product pages.
4. Arm length and neck length
Long-arm keys reach deeper. Some sets, like the KTC HLDS2509, are listed as a short under-neck type.

- Short arm for force, long arm for reach. Turn with the short arm in the screw when you need torque (BobVila).
- Use the ball end for awkward angles, then check the product page or the maker's instructions for any limit on final tightening (Not confirmed on our pages).
FAQ
Is an Allen wrench the same as a hex key?
Yes. Allen wrench, Allen key, hex key and hex wrench describe the same type of tool (BobVila).
Can I use a metric hex key on an inch screw?
No. They are not interchangeable, and forcing them causes damage (BobVila). Choose a metric set or an inch set such as the KTC HL259BSP.
Ball end or straight end?
A ball end lets you turn at an angle (BobVila). Many sets here, such as the VESSEL 8909BP and KTC HLD2509, are listed as ball-end or ball-point; the KTC HLD1509 lists no ball end.
Which sizes do I need?
Six of the 14 products here cover 1.5–10 mm. For large bolts, add a single key such as the KTC HLD150-14 (14 mm).
