Mitutoyo Micrometers guide: models and how to choose

Which Mitutoyo micrometer should you buy?

An outside micrometer measures in 25 mm steps, so you pick the size range first (0-25, 25-50, 50-75 or 75-100 mm), then the type. The table compares popular models. Every value comes from the specification table on each product page.

Model Range (mm) Display (mm) Max. error (µm) Type Protection Data output
MDC-25PX (293-240-30) 0-25 0.001 ±1 Digital, ratchet stop IP65 No terminal
MDC-25PXT (293-244-30) 0-25 0.001 ±1 Digital, ratchet thimble IP65 No terminal
MDC-50PX (293-241-30) 25-50 0.001 ±1 Digital, ratchet stop IP65 No terminal
MDC-75PX (293-242-30) 50-75 0.001 ±2 Digital, ratchet stop IP65 No terminal
MDC-100PX (293-243-30) 75-100 0.001 ±2 Digital, ratchet stop IP65 No terminal
MD-E25 (293-140-40) 0-25 0.001 ±1 Digital IP65 Yes (Digimatic S1, two-way)
M310-25 (102-301) 0-25 0.01 ±2 Mechanical, carbide tips Not confirmed Not confirmed
M810-25 (193-101) 0-25 0.01 ±2 Mechanical with counter, carbide tips Not confirmed Not confirmed
M820-25 (193-111) 0-25 0.001 (vernier scale) ±2 Mechanical with counter, carbide tips Not confirmed Not confirmed

All nine models list Japan as the country of origin. The digital models use a battery (SR44 on the MDC models, CR2032 on the MD-E25). "Not confirmed" means the product page does not state the value, so we do not claim it.

How to choose

  • Wet or dusty shop floor: the MDC-PX models and the MD-E25 are listed as IP65. The mechanical M-series pages do not state a protection class.
  • Sending readings to a computer or data collector: the MD-E25 supports two-way Digimatic S1 communication. The MDC-PX models have no data output terminal.
  • Tighter accuracy on small parts: the 0-25 mm and 25-50 mm MDC-PX models list ±1 µm. The 50-75 mm and 75-100 mm models list ±2 µm.
  • No battery, lowest cost of ownership: the mechanical M310-25 reads 0.01 mm. The M820-25 reads 0.001 mm with a vernier scale.
  • Measuring force: the MDC-25PX lists 5-10 N with a ratchet stop. The MDC-25PXT lists 7-12 N with a ratchet thimble.

Micrometer sets

Need several sizes at once? See the OMST-150B set (0-150 mm) or the OMST1-300B set (0-300 mm). Both list a 0.01 mm display.
