Which Mitutoyo digital caliper should you buy?

For most shop work, a 150 mm, 200 mm or 300 mm digital caliper with 0.01 mm display is the right size. The 200 mm class is the metric size usually called an 8-inch caliper. The table below lists popular models. Every value comes from the specification table on each product page.

All eight models are absolute (ABS) scale, run on one SR44 battery (included) and list Japan as the country of origin. "Not confirmed" means the product page does not state the value, so we do not claim it.

How to choose

  • Wet shop floor (coolant, cutting oil, dust): choose a coolant-proof model. The CD-P15M, CD-P20S, CD-P20M and CD-P30M are listed as IP67.
  • Need to send readings to a computer or data collector: the CD-P20S has no data output. The other seven models in the table do.
  • Hard use on the measuring faces: look for carbide tips. The CD-15AXWW and CD-20AXWW list carbide on both inner and outer faces. The CD-20AXW lists carbide on the outer face only.
  • Larger parts: the 300 mm models (CD-P30M, CD-30AX) have a maximum permissible error of ±0.03 mm, against ±0.02 mm for the 150 mm and 200 mm models in the table.
