Best Ratchet Screwdriver by Job: Offset, Ultra-Thin and Compact Bit Ratchets (11 Japanese Picks)
Share
Quick answer: the best ratchet screwdriver depends on the job
- Very low clearance (behind panels, under dashboards): ENGINEER DR-27. ENGINEER lists an 11 mm thick tip and 18 mm with the bit fitted.
- Tight spaces, simple and steel-bodied: ANEX 425 offset ratchet with 19 mm ultra-short bits and a 16-tooth ratchet.
- Little room to swing the handle: the ANEX 525 Compact Bit Ratchet 52. ANEX says its 52-tooth gear has a fine feed angle for narrow spots.
- One small kit for a toolbag: ANEX 525-5B (5 bits) or 525-10B (10 bits, adds hex keys).
- Full bit set in a case: ANEX 525-28B: Phillips, slotted, hex, Torx and nut-driver bits plus a stubby handle and bit holder.
- Small nuts and screws with one kit: Ko-ken R810D, a ratchet spanner with bits and 5–10 mm sockets in a metal case.
- Many long fasteners to run down: the VESSEL 400ER3-1M electric slim ratchet (motor stops at about 1 N·m; finish by hand).
A typical ratchet screwdriver is in-line: a long handle, a bit at the end and a ratchet you flick with your wrist. That covers most jobs. It does not cover the screw behind a bracket where an in-line driver will not fit, or the spot where you can only move the handle a few degrees. Japanese makers sell many tools for exactly those jobs: flat offset ratchets, ultra-thin heads, fine-tooth bit ratchets and stubby bit sets. Below we pick by job, compare every model we stock with confirmed specs, and explain what to check before you buy. Spec values come from the distributor listings and maker documents in the Sources at the end, mainly the TRUSCO Orange Book catalog and MonotaRO.

Tight spaces and offset access: ANEX 425 series
The ANEX 425 is a flat, steel-handled offset ratchet: the bit sits at a right angle to the handle, so you can reach a screw where an in-line screwdriver is too long to fit. TRUSCO's listing gives a 21 mm head width and calls it an ultra-thin head; MonotaRO lists the same 21 mm as the mounting height and gives a 16 mm head width. The ratchet has 16 teeth, bits lock in with a magnetic chuck, and it uses ANEX ultra-short bits with a 19 mm overall length. Overall length is 108 mm (TRUSCO; MonotaRO lists 108.5 mm).
ANEX 425 Offset Ratchet Screwdriver, Straight Type
ANEX 425-5B Offset Ratchet Screwdriver with 5 Bits, Straight Type
Choose by the bits you need:
- 425: handle with Phillips #2 and 6 mm slotted bits (64 g).
- 425-5B: Phillips #1, #2 (two), #3 and 6 mm slotted (79 g).
- 425-9B: Phillips #1, #2, #3, 6 mm slotted and hex 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 mm (95 g).
Ultra-thin: ENGINEER DR-27
When the gap is the problem rather than the length, look at the ENGINEER DR-27. ENGINEER describes it as an ultra-thin offset ratchet driver with an 11 mm thick tip and 18 mm thickness with the supplied bit fitted. It is 103 mm long and 19.5 mm wide, weighs 54 g, and has a 15-tooth ratchet and a quick-spin mechanism. It takes 1/4" (6.35 mm) hex bits, comes with a Phillips #2 and a 6 × 0.8 mm slotted bit, and stores them in the body.
ENGINEER says it is designed with enough torque for M6 cap bolts. MonotaRO's listing warns not to use it on M8 or larger bolts, and TRUSCO's listing says not to extend the grip with a pipe.
Compact bit ratchet for a toolbag: ANEX 525 Compact Bit Ratchet 52
If you often have only a small arc to swing the handle, tooth count matters (see How to choose). ANEX's Compact Bit Ratchet 52 has a 52-tooth gear, and ANEX says the fine feed angle makes it easier to turn screws in narrow spots. TRUSCO lists a 20 mm head width (MonotaRO lists 20 mm as the mounting height and a 16 mm head width), and the body is 107 mm long. Most of the bits are ANEX 19 mm ultra-short bits (TRUSCO's listing notes the box bits and the H8 hex bit are exceptions).
- 525-5B: Phillips #1, #2 (two), #3 and 6 mm slotted (60 g). The lightest of the 525 kits.
- 525-10B: Phillips #1, #2, #3, 6 mm slotted and hex 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 mm (94 g).
- 525-7S: Phillips #2 plus box (nut-driver) bits H5.5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13 mm (75 g). For small nuts and hex-head bolts.
- 525-9T: Phillips #2 plus ultra-short Torx (hexalobular) T8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 30, 40 (130 g). For appliances, electronics and vehicles that use Torx screws.
Full bit set: ANEX 525-28B
The ANEX 525-28B puts the 52-tooth ratchet, a stubby handle and a bit holder in one case with 28 bits: Phillips #1, #2, #3; 6 mm slotted; hex 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 mm; Torx T6, 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 30, 40; and box bits H5, 5.5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 mm. The case measures 215 × 92 × 43 mm and the set weighs 675 g. Choose it if you want one kit that covers most small screws and nuts at home, in a van or at a workbench.
Ratchet + socket combo: Ko-ken R810D
The Ko-ken R810D is a ratchet bit spanner set rather than a screwdriver handle. TRUSCO's listing gives a 17-piece set: a 102NA ratchet spanner with 1/4" and 5/16" hex openings, Phillips bits #1, #2, #3, a 1.0 × 7 slotted bit, hex bits 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 mm, six sockets (2400M) in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 mm, and an adapter (101A). It all fits a 130 × 65 × 19 mm metal case, and the set weighs 336 g. Ko-ken describes it as suited to narrow spaces and, with the compact case, to work away from the shop. The ratchet tooth count is Not confirmed.
When an electric ratchet makes sense: VESSEL 400ER3-1M
A hand ratchet is slow when you have many long screws or nuts to run down. The VESSEL 400ER3-1M is about the size of a normal ratchet handle (215 mm body) with a small motor. VESSEL says the motor stops at 1 N·m, and you can tighten or loosen by hand up to 60 N·m. No-load speed is 400 rpm, and VESSEL lists a 60-tooth gear. It charges by USB Type-C and takes 6.35 mm hex bits. TRUSCO lists 33 pieces in the set, including 18 bits, nine sockets and two extension bars, and VESSEL gives a set weight of 1,563 g. It is a speed tool, not a breaker bar: use the motor to spin fasteners and your hand for the final turn.

"Head" is the dimension each listing publishes, and the listings do not label it the same way. For ANEX, TRUSCO calls the 21 mm (425) and 20 mm (525) figures the head width, while MonotaRO lists the same figures as the mounting height and gives a 16 mm head width. ENGINEER gives thickness (11 mm, 18 mm with bit) and width (19.5 mm). Check the product photos before you compare heads across brands. ANEX head thickness is Not confirmed. Values come from the TRUSCO Orange Book, MonotaRO and MISUMI listings and the VESSEL leaflet in the Sources.

How to choose a ratchet screwdriver
1. Ratchet teeth (how small the steps are)
A ratchet lets you turn a screw by moving your wrist back and forth without changing your grip (MonotaRO). How far you must swing before the next tooth engages depends on the tooth count: the minimum swing is 360° divided by the number of teeth, so a 72-tooth head indexes every 5° and a 24-tooth head needs 15° (Firgelli Automations). More teeth help when you can only move the handle a little. The same source notes that fine-tooth heads have less shear area per tooth, so they carry less torque. In our range, the ANEX 525 series has 52 teeth, the ANEX 425 has 16 and the ENGINEER DR-27 has 15.
2. Offset or in-line
An in-line ratchet screwdriver needs room for its full length behind the screw. A flat offset ratchet such as the ANEX 425 or ENGINEER DR-27 holds the bit at a right angle to the handle, so what matters is the head height, not the length. MonotaRO also notes that stubby handles are handy in narrow spots and T-handles allow stronger tightening. The ANEX 525-28B gives you both: the flat 52-tooth ratchet and a stubby handle.
3. Bit size: 1/4" hex = 6.35 mm
Every hand ratchet screwdriver in this guide takes 6.35 mm hex bits (TRUSCO listings). 6.35 mm is the standard 1/4" hex shank size (The Pi Hut, on the DR-27). The Ko-ken R810D spanner has 1/4" and 5/16" hex openings. One catch: flat offset ratchets are built around very short bits. Most ANEX bits in these sets are 19 mm ultra-short bits, and longer bits stick out further from the head, so they may not fit the same gap. Check the bit length before you buy spares.
4. Length and thickness
MonotaRO advises checking overall length before you buy. For offset ratchets, also compare the published head size with your gap, and remember to add the bit. ENGINEER, for example, gives 11 mm for the DR-27 tip but 18 mm with the bit fitted.
5. Reversing mechanism
Many reversible ratchet heads use a selector that changes which end of the pawl engages the teeth (Firgelli Automations). VESSEL says the 400ER3 handles forward and reverse by re-inserting the bit. How the ANEX and ENGINEER hand ratchets in this guide reverse is Not confirmed in the sources we checked, so look at the product photos before you order, or ask us.
A note on Japanese screws
If you work on a Japanese car or motorcycle, the cross-head screws may be JIS rather than Phillips. Read our guide: JIS vs Phillips explained. Whether the bits in these sets are JIS-type is Not confirmed.
FAQ
What is the best ratchet screwdriver?
It depends on where the screw is. For very low clearance, the ENGINEER DR-27 (11 mm tip, 18 mm with bit). For screws behind brackets, an offset ratchet such as the ANEX 425. When you have little room to swing the handle, the 52-tooth ANEX 525 Compact Bit Ratchet. For one kit that covers most small screws and nuts, the ANEX 525-28B.
Is a ratchet screwdriver worth it?
Yes, if you drive more than a few screws or work where you cannot re-grip a handle. A ratchet lets you keep your grip and turn the screw with back-and-forth wrist movements (MonotaRO). An offset ratchet also reaches screws an ordinary screwdriver cannot fit behind.
Do these take standard 1/4" hex bits?
Yes. All the hand ratchet screwdrivers here use 6.35 mm (1/4") hex bits. Flat offset ratchets work best with ultra-short bits; most ANEX bits in the 425 and 525 sets are 19 mm long (TRUSCO notes the 525 box bits and H8 hex bit are exceptions).
What does "52-tooth" mean on the ANEX 525?
The ratchet gear has 52 teeth. More teeth means a smaller swing before the next tooth engages (Firgelli Automations), which ANEX says helps in narrow spots.
Can I use a ratchet screwdriver on bolts?
For small ones, yes, with hex or box bits. ENGINEER says the DR-27 is designed with enough torque for M6 cap bolts, and MonotaRO's listing says not to use it on M8 or larger. For small nuts, the ANEX 525-7S (box bits 5.5–13 mm) and Ko-ken R810D (sockets 5–10 mm) include bits or sockets for the job.
