Best Socket Set by Job: Drive Size, 6- vs 12-Point, Metric vs SAE and 16 Japanese Picks

Quick answer: choose a socket set by drive size first, then by whether you already own a ratchet

  • One set with everything for 3/8" drive: the Ko-ken 3286Z (21 pieces: 14 metric sockets from 7 to 22 mm, ratchet, speeder, extensions, breaker bar and universal joint in a metal case).
  • Small fasteners and tight spaces (1/4" drive): the ENGINEER TWS-02 (16 pieces, metric 4–13 mm, with ratchet and extensions) or the SAE version, TWS-01.
  • Sockets only, every size from 8 to 19 mm (3/8"): the Ko-ken RS3400M/12 (6-point) or RS3405M/12 (12-point), on a socket rail.
  • Bigger bolts (1/2" drive): the Ko-ken RS4400M/10 (10–22 mm) or KTC TB410XE (8–24 mm).
  • Inch (SAE) sizes: the Ko-ken RS3400A/9 (1/4"–3/4") or NEPROS NTB306BA (3/8"–11/16").
  • Using an impact wrench? Use impact sockets, not hand sockets. BobVila warns regular sockets can shatter under impact-tool force.

A socket set is a group of sockets in one drive size, sometimes packed with a ratchet, extensions and other handles. Many of the sets here are sold as sockets only, on a rail or holder, for use with a ratchet you already own. This guide sorts socket sets by job and compares 16 sets from Ko-ken, KTC, NEPROS, ENGINEER and TONE, using the specifications on their product pages. "Not confirmed" means the page does not state the value.

Why look at Japanese socket sets?

We sell Japanese tools, so this guide covers Japanese brands only. Here is what their product pages show, rather than general claims about quality:

  • Full size runs. The Ko-ken RS3400M/12 and RS3405M/12 cover every metric size from 8 to 19 mm, including 9, 15, 16 and 18 mm.
  • Steel stated. Ko-ken lists chrome molybdenum steel (SCM435) for its socket rail sets; KTC lists special tool steel; ENGINEER lists chrome molybdenum steel sockets and a chrome vanadium ratchet.
  • Country of origin stated on most pages. The Ko-ken, KTC and ENGINEER sets here list Japan. The TONE and NEPROS pages in this guide do not state it.
  • Sockets-only sets. Many sets are sockets on a rail or holder, so you can add sizes to a ratchet you already own instead of buying another handle.

What we do not claim: that these sockets are stronger or last longer than American or European ones. We have not found a test that compares them, so judge each set by its stated specifications.

The 5 things that decide which socket set you need

1. Drive size

The drive is the square hole that fits the ratchet: 1/4" (6.35 mm), 3/8" (9.5 mm) or 1/2" (12.7 mm). BobVila says 1/4" drive is ideal in tight spaces and on recessed nuts but gives less torque, 3/8" is the most common, and 1/2" suits high-torque jobs such as wheels and breaker bars.

2. 6-point or 12-point

BobVila says 6-point sockets are sturdier because of their thicker walls and grip the flat sides, so they slip less on worn fasteners. It says 12-point sockets suit lower-torque work and are easier to seat in awkward positions. Ko-ken sells the same 3/8" size run in both shapes (RS3400M/12 and RS3405M/12), and the KTC TB410XE mixes them (6-point for 8–12 mm, 12-point for 13–24 mm).

3. Metric or SAE

BobVila notes that SAE sockets are mainly for American-made products and metric sockets suit imported cars. Most sets in this guide are metric. For inch sizes, see the Ko-ken RS3400A/9, NEPROS NTB306BA or ENGINEER TWS-01.

4. Shallow or deep

Shallow sockets are the common type. BobVila says deep sockets reach nuts that sit farther down a bolt. Semi-deep sockets, such as the Ko-ken RS3300X/8, sit between the two.

5. Complete kit or sockets only

A complete kit (Ko-ken 3286Z, ENGINEER TWS-01, TWS-02 and TWS-04) includes a ratchet and other handles. A sockets-only set needs a ratchet of the same drive size; see our 3/8" ratchet comparison and 1/2" ratchet comparison.

FAQ

What drive size socket set should I buy first?

BobVila calls 3/8" drive the most common and most available. Start with 3/8", then add 1/4" for small fasteners in tight spaces and 1/2" for wheels and other high-torque jobs, as BobVila describes for each size.

Should I buy 6-point or 12-point sockets?

BobVila says 6-point sockets are sturdier and slip less on worn fasteners, while 12-point sockets are easier to seat in awkward positions and suit lower-torque work. If you buy one set, 6-point is the safer choice for stuck or worn nuts.

Can I use these sockets with an impact wrench?

Only with impact sockets. BobVila warns that regular sockets can shatter under impact-tool force. Of the sets mentioned in this guide, the KTC TBP4903 is listed as an impact socket set, and Ko-ken distributors sell the Ko-ken 14201M as a thin-wall impact wheel-nut set. The other sets are hand sockets.

Do these sets come with a ratchet?

Only the complete kits do: Ko-ken 3286Z and ENGINEER TWS-01, TWS-02 and TWS-04. The Ko-ken and KTC socket sets are sockets on a rail or holder. The TONE HRM311F is a set of ratchet ring-wrench sockets on a holder; its drive connection is not confirmed on the page.
